Student spotlight: Meet Lea from France

Lea moved to London to study MA Arts & Cultural Management at King’s College London. She has made the most of her time in London by gaining a variety of work experiences and setting up her own start-up business, ToddlerTunez. We spoke to Lea about her time living and studying in London.

What do you enjoy most about your MA Arts & Cultural Management degree at KCL?

I really love how international my classmates are. Just in my close circle, I have a Finnish, an Italian, a Malaysian, a Korean and a friend from the Czech Republic! It’s incredible, I’ve learned so much about the world from everyone I’ve met on this course. I feel as though I’m gaining so much more than just an MA in Arts & Cultural Management.

How would you describe London in three words?

Creative, fast-paced and lively.

What have you enjoyed most during your time as a student in London?

In terms of Arts and Culture, I don’t think there is a better place to be! There are numerous, high level events taking place, we are truly spoiled for choice! My favourite event this year has to be Lumiere London. Lumiere is a light installation organised by Artichoke that sets up light shows all over London, it was gorgeous!

Are you working during your studies?

I currently work at the King’s Entrepreneurship Institute which has been an amazing experience. My highlight has been organising the photo shoot for the front cover of their annual Start! Magazine which was something I’d never done before but turned out to love.

I am also interning at HMDT Music where I lead a choir and teach recorder and general music classes for young children. This has also been an eye-opening experience. In addition, I run my start-up, ToddlerTunez, a service company which combines babysitting with music. It aims to create an affordable and rewarding experience for both parents and children.

Working during your studies is great in the sense that you have a life outside of university which may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for me, it is ideal.

Could you tell us more about your start-up business, ToddlerTunez?

Music lessons and babysitting are expensive in London, and that is magnified by the fact that these are two separate services. What ToddlerTunez does is combine the two to provide more children with the opportunity of a musical upbringing.

What motivated you to develop this project?

Ultimately, I merged my two passions, music and children. It started off as a good way to earn money alongside my studies, but I soon realised that families really loved the concept. There is a huge amount of research on the benefits of early exposure to music and I realised I could make a real educational difference in the lives of children.

How has KCL supported you with the development of your business?

I chose the optional module ‘Entrepreneurial Opportunity’ which helped me to analyse my target market and to innovate and stay relevant within the industries of childcare and music education. I also got the opportunity to practice pitching to the Project Manager and the Producing Coordinator of the Battersea Arts Centre which was a steep and rewarding learning curve for me.

What are your plans after graduating?

I hope to further develop ToddlerTunez and gain full time employment within an arts organisation in London because I feel there is still so much more to explore here.

Do you have any advice for other students thinking about studying in London?

I would advise to take all the opportunities that come your way. That way, you’ll meet amazing people and it’ll be easier to settle in because moving to such a huge city can be quite overwhelming at first, at least it was for me. But once I overcame the few hurdles of settling in, I learned to love it. There is no greater city to spark your creativity!
