Student Spotlight: Meet Dousan, BA Industrial Design Technology Student at Brunel University London

Dousan is studying BA Industrial Design Technology at Brunel University London. As part of his degree course, he has designed a new way of storing rice which is more functional and visually appealing.

Here Dousan shares his reasons for moving from Hong Kong to study in London and his experiences of living and studying in the city so far.

  1. Why did you choose to study BA Industrial Design Technology and Brunel University London?

I was looking for a design course that offers a practical perspective of the design process. The design school of Brunel University London has consistently been ranked at the top of global league tables which is why I chose this course.

  1. What do you enjoy most about your course?

My course offers an option to take a placement year, where I got to work in the industry as a full-time designer for 10 months. I worked as a graphic designer at CCD Design and Ergonomics based in King’s Cross. I worked with clients such as the V&A Museum, TATE, and Victoria and Albert Theatre. I have learnt a lot about how the design business operates during my time working there, and makes me feel prepared to enter the industry when I graduate.

  1. Why did you choose to study in London?

I have always wanted to study my undergraduate degree in London, ever since I visited when I was younger. I really enjoy the culture of the city and how the Art and Design sector thrives. London is vibrant, diverse and creative.

  1. Can you tell us a bit about the projects you have worked on during your studies?

One of my projects involves rice storage options. Currently, rice is only packaged in bags. It is extremely outdated. My new concept proposes a way of rice storage that is functional and visually appealing. A clear plastic container is used so users can see the content at a glance. It also provides better protection from tearing and dampness and is easier to grip. The cap doubles as a measuring cup. Additionally, the scale printed on the side of the container allows users to accurately judge when to restock more rice. A square profile is used because it resembles the shape of rice fields.

  1. Do you have any advice for other students thinking about studying in London?

My advice to anyone wanting to study design in London is to make the most of the city. Go to exhibitions and galleries and expand your horizon to learn from some of the most talented artists and designers in London.

Dousan also recently received the D&AD New Blood Pencil Award for his Squarespace Template Concept. You can also find more details about Dousan’s work on his website and Instagram.
