After the success of the London 2012 Olympics, the site of the Olympic Games is now being transformed into a vibrant new quarter of London.
Several universities are involved in making this part of London an exciting hub for education and innovation. The University of East London and Birkbeck, University of London, have already opened a joint campus just outside the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Loughborough University is set to open its London campus at the site in 2015 and University College London is also drawing up plans for a campus at the Olympic Park.
Connecting people and technology
The Olympic Park is part of what is known as London’s Tech City. Tech City was launched in November 2010, to create a world-leading technology centre in East London.
Tech City is home to one of the largest concentrations of small, fast- growing digital technology companies in Europe. The UK government, as well as major global technology companies including Cisco, Intel and Google, actively support Tech City. Google operates the Google Campus in Tech City which is a space for students looking to collaborate and network with other like-minded entrepreneurs.
In addition to the universities that are basing themselves at the Olympic Park, other London universities are active in the Tech City area with the aim to create strong links between education and industry.
Benefits to students
City University London, Imperial College London, Loughborough University and University College London are just some of the academic partners found in projects based in the Tech City cluster.
Loughborough University and University College London have agreed to work with the Olympic Legacy Company to establish a bridge between academia and enterprise in the Olympic Park. Imperial College have agreed to advise on the creation of an accelerator space for spinout companies at the Olympic Park. The accelerator space will provide start-up companies with a physical space to operate from, network and create ideas.
City University is also involved in a number of Tech City projects. CityUnrulyversity is a free pop-up university in the heart of Tech City. It aims to inform, inspire and empower the next generation of Tech City entrepreneurs. Taught by leading academics of City University London, City Unrulyversity combines practical relevance with academic rigour, theoretical underpinnings, and the latest research.
Additionally, the Hangout is a co-working space which brings together City University students, alumni and external Tech start-ups and is designed to foster relationships and develop collaborations.
London’s Tech City education hub is the ideal place for students who are looking for a study experience that combines world-class education with strong industry links. If that sounds like you, take a look at the university profiles to find out more about these institutions.
