Postgraduate study normally refers to a master’s or PhD degree, and some universities also offer Postgraduate Diploma programmes. In order to apply for a postgraduate degree, you usually need to apply directly to the university, via the university’s own website, or via a system called UKPASS.
Before you start your application, there are several things you need to consider:
What is the difference between a postgraduate diploma, master and doctorate (PhD)?
These three postgraduate classifications relate to different levels of a postgraduate qualification.
A postgraduate diploma is a popular option for students who do not have the time or finances to embark on a full-time masters course. A student might also take a diploma qualification if the results achieved in the bachelor degree do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters course.
Typically, a Masters qualification is a one-year course in a subject area you want to specialise in. You will be required to have a bachelor degree before applying for a masters course.
A PhD course is a research intensive doctorate which sees students spend 3 to 4 years researching a particular topic. Upon successful completion, you will hold the title of Doctor in your chosen field. You will normally need to complete a bachelor and master degree before applying for a PhD and the university must have a suitable supervisor to oversee your thesis.
Am I eligible to apply for a postgraduate degree?
To be eligible for a postgraduate degree, you must first complete your bachelor studies. Each university has different entry requirements so you should contact your preferred universities before submitting an application to ensure you meet all the academic and English language requirements.
How do I apply?
To apply for a postgraduate degree, you first have to search for the course you want to study and decide which universities you want to apply to. You will then apply to each university separately. All London universities have online application systems. This means you complete all your details online and scan and upload any relevant documents such as a copy of your passport and degree certificates.
For PhD programmes, applicants are usually expected to identify a suitable supervisor at the university first.
When do I apply?
Some of the most popular courses have application deadlines which are set by each university individually. It is therefore important to check this early. There are, however, many postgraduate courses that do not have strict application deadlines.
To start your postgraduate application now, use our course search to find which university offers your desired course.
You can also look at the London university profiles for more information on each university.
