London Collections: Men Shows British Fashion Talent

This week was big for British menswear as the London Collections: Men event was held in the UK capital. With 30 catwalk shows, presentations and events over four days, London Collections: Men (LC:M) also showcased the fashion-related talent pouring from London’s universities.

Thirty-four local and international fashion designers, including seven London College of Fashion alumni participated in the event and a report on the history of London’s fashion written by a Royal College of Art graduate was launched by London’s Mayor Boris Johnson on Tuesday.

The London College of Fashion alumni included luxury menswear label Baartmans & Seigel, Domingo Rodriguez and Kay Kwok. Read more about their involvement on the LCF blog

London’s status as a hub for men’s fashion is by no means a recent phenomenon however. As part of LC:M, Keren Protheroe, a PHD alumnus of the History of Fashion course at the Royal College of Art has written a report based on a V&A study commissioned by the British Fashion Council that documents 350 years of men’s fashion in London and the UK.

Bondage trousers, the bowler hat, brogues, the dandy, the floral shirt and tie, the great coat/riding coat, the three piece suit, the trench coat, tweed and tartan, and wellington boots have all been identified as the 10 iconic styles that originated in Britain and have become mainstays in international menswear.

From the report, LC:M produced a handy London Menswear Map. Read more, see a Google map of the locations and download a PDF at www.visitlondon.com

According to a British Fashion Council press release, the UK is renowned for having the best fashion colleges in the world. Students thinking about studying fashion or design in London will also be pleased to learn that the UK fashion industry supports an estimated 816,000 jobs and is the largest employer of all the creative industries. The UK fashion industry is similar in size to the food/beverages services and telecommunications industries and bigger than the wholesale and retail of automotives, sports activities, chemical manufacture and advertising/video sectors.
