Student spotlight: Meet Ayesha from India

Indian student Ayesha moved to London to study for a Masters degree in Business Analytics (Computer Science) at University College London. Ayesha was one of 11 lucky students to be welcomed to London as part of the International Student Welcome event.

Ayesha and the other students were welcomed to the city by Deputy Mayor of London Rajesh Agrawal at London’s City Hall, before being taken on a tour of some of London’s most famous sights. The day included afternoon tea at Shakespeare’s Globe, a private ride on the London Eye, an exhilarating speed boat tour with Thames Jet and a drinks reception at the rooftop terrace at Urbanest student accommodation

Here Ayesha tells us more about herself, why she chose to study in London and what her impressions are so far.

Ayesha, why did you choose to study MSc Business Analytics (Computer Science) at UCL?

I studied computer science engineering for my undergraduate degree in India so I was keen on doing my masters in a similar field. However, I also wanted to pursue something related to management and business. I searched through many university websites in the UK to find out about the programmes they were offering. Being deeply interested in business and data, I felt that UCL offered a programme which was perfect for me. I finally chose to study at UCL because of its reputation and also because it is ranked the 7th top university in the world by the ‘QS World University Rankings’. I had no doubt UCL was the right choice for me.

What do you enjoy most about your university and course so far?

I have enjoyed every part of being a UCL student so far. The campus is very engaging and filled with events, there is always something to do in your free time. There are many study spaces available at the university to study but also plenty of places to hang out with friends. There are students studying here from many different backgrounds so there’s so much to learn from everyone.

What I like most about my course is that the course structure involves teaching of both business and analytics, such as the module called ‘Business strategy and analytics’. We learn about both worlds of data and management. The timings of the classes are also very convenient. I have lectures on three days a week which means I also have enough time for self-study and assignments.

Why did you choose to study in London and what is your experience of living here so far?

London is amazing, bustling and cosmopolitan. London is the best city anyone can dream of to pursue their studies. London has a very lovely, vibrant, lively, diverse and eclectic atmosphere. It has a wide choice of universities, including the world’s top 4 universities. UK universities also offer shorter and intensive education, meaning it takes only a year to complete a masters degree. London is multicultural where people of different cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds come together. There’s always so much to learn in a city like London. This is why I had no second thoughts about choosing London.

The International Student Welcome event was my best day in London so far because I had an amazing experience. The attractions – City Hall, the London Eye, the Thames Jet speed boat – were amazing and you can never get bored of them.

What is your favourite place in London and why?

My favourite places in London so far are the parks in London, such as Hyde Park, Regents Park, Little Venice and Richmond Park, to name just a few! They are great if you want to spend some time on your own or with friends.

Do you have any advice for other students thinking about studying in London?

My advice to the other students looking to study in London would be to do your research, choose the right course and then go with the flow. Once you are here, study, explore and have fun!
