Happy Lunar New Year!

Chinese New Year London

London’s Chinese New Year celebrations are the largest outside Asia. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people come together in the West End to wish each other “Kung Hei Fat Choi” (or Happy New Year).

On 31st January 2014, we welcomed the Year of the Horse. London’s residents and visitors came to Chinatown, Trafalgar Square and Shaftesbury Avenue to celebrate the beginning of the new Lunar year. The celebrations included a parade through the city and a main stage in Trafalgar square where visiting artists from China performed throughout the day.

The Chinese New Year celebrations are a perfect example of London’s diverse cultural communities. The event saw people from many different countries and backgrounds come together to enjoy this rich cultural experience. Amongst those celebrating on the streets were many international students who are currently studying at a London university. There are over 100,000 international students in London from 200 countries, including over 15,000 Chinese students from the mainland and Hong Kong.

Ishani, a student from India studying for an LLM at Queen Mary, University of London, took part in the celebrations to experience something new in London. She said “the attire, the soft-spoken people, glimpses of their innovativeness in their handcrafts, the red glittery pumpkin shaped lanterns hanging from above… the entire ambiance felt Chinese. The place was brightly lit with happiness and celebration.
