London in three words? Unique, Exhilarating and Inspiring.

German student Katie studied Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins, UAL. Here she shares her advice to prospective students thinking about studying in London.

How did you choose your course and university?

I was studying on a foundation course at Camberwell College of Arts when we had some faculty from the Graphic Design course at CSM give a presentation about studying on their course. Since both colleges are part of UAL there was plenty of advice from tutors on which courses were suitable. In the end I decided to go to CSM because I really liked their course structure, which allowed first years to experiment with four different pathways within the field of Graphic Design before specializing in one of them. At that point I was very torn between studying illustration or graphic design, and the nature of the course allowed me to do both.

I decided more which course was right for me rather, than which college, since they’re all connected through UAL. However Central Saint Martins has a recognizable name internationally, which was an added a bonus.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The people that I met on my course where extremely talented, and I ended up learning a lot from my peers. I think the friends and connections you make at University are incredibly important and I’ve had the pleasure to meet some truly inspiring people.

I also really enjoyed the facilities that where available, especially the print studio. Now that I’ve graduated I realize how amazing the studios were.

Why did you choose to study in London?

I’ve always loved London, and had wanted to live here since my first visit when I was twelve.

It’s one of the few cities that I’ve visited that has a perfect juxtaposition of old and new. It’s a city with a long history that also allows you a glimpse into the future.

London is the capital for the creative industries so to me it made sense to study here. Wherever you live in London you have a huge variety of Museums, Galleries and events right on your doorstep. Some of the world’s most renowned Art Schools are in London, and it just bursts with creativity.

What have you enjoyed most during your time as a student in London?

I love London’s versatility, each part of the city has its own character and it’s extremely exciting to go out and explore, I especially love that it has so many parks! Also, Londoner’s are friendly people and there are cultures from all over the world represented here. Living here, I’ve experienced seeing a bigger picture and it has shaped me as a person, which I think I could not have developed anywhere else.

What are your plans after graduating?

Since graduating last summer, I’ve sold and exhibited at a number of venues, including the London Illustration and Affordable Art Fair. I’ve also worked as an in-house illustrator for a Fashion brand and as a freelancer for a number of other clients.
