London remains higher education capital of the world

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released today, confirm London remains the higher education capital of the world. London has 4 universities in the global top 40, more than any other city in the world.

Imperial College London (8th) and University College London (16th) remain in the top 20 whilst London School of Economics and Political Science (25th) and King’s College London (36th) also feature in the world’s top 40.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has welcomed the rankings, saying:

“London has the highest concentration of top ranked universities in the world. They are at the heart of what makes London the world’s leading city – open to talent, enterprise and innovation.

“London attracts more international students than any other city – over 100,000 international students, from over 200 countries.

Rankings Methodology

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings rank research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators are used to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas:

Teaching (the learning environment)

Research (volume, income and reputation)

Citations (research influence);

International outlook (staff, students and research)

Industry income (knowledge transfer).
